Prologue – The journey begins.
So maybe I should start from the beginning – who am I and why am I doing this?
First off, I’m a dad on the go (I put the “go” in there because it makes me feel better about being tired all the time). My marriage ended spectacularly on bad terms, something that’s still a struggle but I’ll get there. The kids, or as I call them “the creatures”, are healthy and are mostly well adjusted to the whole thing. They’re with me half the time, so I balance that, with working full time, and making sure my house doesn’t completely fall apart. I went through a lot during my marriage and divorce, so at this stage in my existence it’s all about living my best life and making the most of the time I have with my family and my friends.

The “why”
The next question on the list so why exactly am I doing this? I used to be a professional journalist many years ago. I loved it, but life has a funny way of forcing you to make hard choices and I ended leaving for financial reasons. I worked at small newspapers all across the country for the adventure of it and a great health package. In my late 20s I was close to breaking into one of the bigger city newspapers and the truth is the money still sucked and as my partner says “you have the realization that you want to be able to afford toilet paper in your 70s.” I ended up leaving and getting a more corporate job – that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any adventures though. All that to say, I miss being a writer and I like the idea of writing again.

Hitting the road
That just leaves the last question – so what is this all about. I actually wrestled a bit about that question – as the search engines say you need to have a niche. I spitballed this little enterprise as a combination journal, travel log, parenting journal, “home improvements gone wrong” blog, so pretty much all the things. In the end I think this is really a lifestyle blog of a parent just trying to make the best of a new chapter in life. Like I said, a lot of this is about me getting a chance to write, but hopefully as you start out on this journey with me there’s a lit bit of learning, some crying and maybe some laughter – but not necessarily in that order. With that, let’s hit the road.
