A weekend in Ottawa (Fall Romance Edition)

If you think Ottawa is just home to stuffed-up bureaucrats and overstuffed politicians—you’re not wrong. Originally elevated by Queen Victoria from a small lumber town to the national capital, it’s not exactly the city people write love songs about. But look beneath the surface (or paperwork), and you’ll find world-class museums, quiet canals, and a deep variety of restaurants that can win anyone’s heart—and rival those other cities that get all the romantic credit.

Friday: Gothic Architecture and Canal Strolls

🕓 4:00 p.m. – Sightseeing Warm-Up Start your romantic weekend in Ottawa with a little sightseeing. It may not be the most intimate activity, but it’s a great way to get acclimated before the magic begins. Head to Parliament Hill and explore the Gothic Revival buildings that house Canada’s government. Snap a few photos, then stroll along Wellington Street to admire the Supreme Court of Canada, designed by Montreal architect Ernest Cormier. If you’re feeling touristy, guided tours are available.

On your way back, stop by the Senate of Canada Building—formerly Ottawa’s central train station and now the Senate’s temporary home during Parliament renovations.

🕡 6:30 p.m. – Dinner at the ByWard Market With sightseeing out of the way, head to the ByWard Market, Ottawa’s lively hub for food and entertainment. For dinner, book a table at The Dark Fork, tucked into a quiet courtyard that feels like a European side street. The menu draws inspiration from LA, New York, and Paris—eclectic, delicious, and perfect for a romantic evening.

🕣 8:30 p.m. – Walk Along the Rideau Canal After dinner, take a moonlit walk along the Rideau Canal. It’s romantic any time of year, but in fall, when the leaves begin to change, it’s especially breathtaking. Stick to the west side of the canal and follow the path upstream toward the Glebe. Turn off onto Patterson Creek, where the small park and winding paths offer one of the most romantic spots in the city. Sit under a streetlight and soak it all in—you’ll feel like you’ve wandered into a Sinatra song.

Saturday: Markets, Hikes, and Hidden Gems

🕙 10:00 a.m. – Farmer’s Market Brunch Start your day with a visit to one of Ottawa’s many farmer’s markets. While the ByWard Market will be buzzing, the Westboro Market offers a quieter alternative. Set up along a local park, it features fresh produce, artisan goods, and food vendors. Grab a coffee and some snacks and enjoy a laid-back brunch in the park.

🕧 12:30 p.m. – Hike in Gatineau Park Cross the river into Quebec and explore Gatineau Park, the largest green space in the National Capital Region. In fall, the park transforms into a kaleidoscope of colour—perfect for a romantic hike. Two great options:

Carbide Willson Ruins Trail: An easy 4 km round trip with views of Meech Lake and a waterfall beside historic stone ruins.

Wolf Trail: A longer, more challenging hike through forested hills with sweeping views of the Ottawa Valley.

🕓 4:00 p.m. – Drinks in Chelsea Before heading back to Ottawa, stop in Chelsea, a charming village with cozy bars and coffee shops. It’s the perfect way to wind down after your hike.

🕕 6:00 p.m. – Dinner and Dancing at The Rabbit Hole Romance isn’t just about long walks in the woods—get dressed up and head to The Rabbit Hole on Sparks Street. This unique venue combines a restaurant, speakeasy, and nightclub inside a historic 122-year-old building. Start with dinner (the pizza is excellent), then descend into the cocktail lounge. By 10 p.m., the space transforms into a dance club—end your night on the dance floor.

🕚 11:00 p.m. – Late-Night Stroll at Major’s Hill Park Wrap up the evening with a quiet walk through Major’s Hill Park, located behind the Château Laurier. With views of Parliament and the Ottawa River, it’s the perfect spot for a slow dance or quiet moment under the stars.

Sunday: Art, Coffee, and Farewell Vibes

🕘 9:00 a.m. – Coffee and Brunch Ease into your final day with coffee from Ugly Monday Coffee Shop, then head to Chez Lucien for brunch. During the week, it’s a lively spot for government workers; on Sunday mornings, it’s relaxed and cozy—ideal for unwinding after a busy weekend.

🕚 11:00 a.m. – National Gallery of Canada Finish your romantic getaway with a visit to the National Gallery of Canada. Don’t miss the Group of Seven gallery, showcasing iconic Canadian landscapes. The building’s glass tower is impossible to miss, and its riverside location makes it a peaceful, reflective end to your trip.
